(THE MUSEUM OF THE ORDINARY THINGS ),

"Architecture is a means to maintain the spirit of community solidarity and harmony with nature".

Once recognized by "The Economist" as one of the most important countries in the next decade, we can see that Indonesia is on its way to becoming the leader of ASEAN in terms of economy, hardware, software and psychology. The author has recently traveled to three Southeast Asian countries, Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand, and invited several contemporary architects and interior designers to share with us the current state of the local culture and their personal views on the issue of sustainability. Our first stop will be JOGJA, the oldest city on the island of Java and also the capital of art and culture in Indonesia, where we will visit EKO PRAWOTO, an architectural wizard from the mountains.

Yogyakarta is a place where people live a simple and happy life, where the ease of living nurtures a strong artistic energy, and where artists sympathize with each other and work together to create their own artistic and cultural community. The city of Yogyakarta is not far from the villages, so many artists choose to live in the countryside. Next day, I drove to EKO's studio in the mountains and forests, where there is no civilization, no 3C network, and only trees as neighbors, which is like being isolated from the world, and I wondered how he came here.

EKO PRAWOTO is an architect and an educator, he has been teaching at DUTA WACANA CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY since 1985, and founded "EKO PRAWOTO ARCHITECTURE WORKSHOP" as the chief architect in 2000. In 2006, Yogyakarta was hit by a massive earthquake. Fortunately, there were many bamboo hut builders in the village who were able to rebuild the shelters quickly, and Eko believed that this traditional wisdom should be preserved and continued, so he bought the village's traditional buildings and maintained and organized them, suggesting the preciousness of the traditional architecture in the area. We sat in his studio made of recycled materials and listened to his words of wisdom. The cozy and airy space really let us feel the tranquility and peace of the earth.

Living in a village, he wakes up early and goes to bed early every day. In the daytime, he enjoys observing the villagers' daily farming activities, learning from their wisdom, and capturing the interactions between nature and life, and he laughs that uploading these photos to Instagram has also become his spare time for work. It is worth mentioning that EKO has collected many folk craftsmen's tools related to construction and agriculture, and has created "THE MUSEUM OF THE ORDINARY THINGS", which is full of colorful collections. I realized that this is undoubtedly an extremely organic education system that combines nature, land, climate and the precious knowledge base of craftsmen and artisans. He said that he hoped these folk artifacts would continue to be passed down and spread from one generation to the next.

When it comes to sustainability, he believes that living in harmony with nature, which is inherited from the wisdom of local ancestors, is one of the most important keys to a sustainable existence. Over the years, through his international architectural expertise, he has returned to the mountains and forests to build the village in the spirit of nature, and has worked with local craftsmen to develop earthquake-resistant building methods, make good use of recycled materials, create a roaming housing system, and guide villagers to integrate local traditional building methods into SELF-BUILDING, which not only reduces construction costs, but also creates more job opportunities, making the village more and more viable. Finally, EKO led us to "The River Whispers", the original eco-colony clubhouse that he created. What a beautiful name, but even more beautiful is the way he treats nature; we looked at the rushing water together, and this moment became eternity.
